Baby Quilt

Dear Readers,

I made this baby quilt from IKEA Textiles I purchased sometime ago. I made this quilt for our new baby who will join us soon.


Materials Used:

• 1m length Printed Cotton Fabric
• Cotton Thread
• Quilting Needle
• Polyfill



 

I loved the Hummingbird Design on this fabric and decided to place it in the centre of the quilt and quilted straigth lines around it to get the fluffiness.

 

Method:

 

• The fabric was folded in half and stitched on two sides from the wrong side.
• Turn the fabric inside out and fill with polyfill or any quilt batting you life.
• Blanket stitch to close the ends.
• I quilted small stitches in straight rows at equal distances and ensured the hummingbird is not stitched over.

 

Its a very quick one day project for a newborn.

 



Alphabet Quilt for pre-schooler

 Dear Readers,

I couldn't resist myself from using one of the Quilt Panels from our Store when I saw this cute alphabet print.

Materials Used:

• Printed Quilt Panel
• Pre-Quilted Silk Backing
• Black Thread
• Quilting Needle

Step By Step:

1. Stitch the backing to the panel by folding the edges to make a border. Use hemming to get a neat finish result
2. I used thick cotton thread for quilting the alphabet boxes to get a puffed up effect. Use running stitch for quilting the boxes.

I am very pleased with the end result of this quilt. It's a surprise for my little girl.

Granny Squares - Crochet Project

Sharing some of my mum's crafts again. She made this cute granny square small rug. 

In India we constantly need small rugs(chattai) for sitting on the floor. 

This small rug is used everyday for pooja time (god worshiping time) for sitting on the floor while performing the worships. 

Mum has many granny squares which she has created long time ago and still has not connected them to make rugs... I have shared some samples below...

Treasures of Garage Sale

 Hello Friends,

Shopping at Garage sales and Opportunity shops, charity shops for unique things is my favourite pass time activity.

 I recently found this beautiful hand crocheted throw rug at my neighbour's garage sale!

I loved the intricate flower patterns and also liked the way these flowers are interlinked

Recycled Quilt - 1st Quilt

 Sharing our first Quilt experience with you all.

This quilt is made by me and my mum for my daughter S.  The quilt is suitable for kids single bed and cosy to provide warmth in the cool winter nights. 

Rajasthani motif - elephant

We made this quilt over a year ago when the quilt bug got to us! We decided to use all the fabrics lying around the house to learn the ropes of trade. We followed step-by-step quilter's guide in making this quilt. 

Little One - S

 I personally never expected this project to turnout even up to use able standards let alone sharing on the blog! But when I showed it to our little one , she absolutely loved it and was frolicking on it for good 30 minutes.... so I decided to capture this moment and share with my blogdost (blog friends)

Closer Look

 Materials used: 

1. Queen bed fitted bedspread(chequered blue)
2. Cotton skirt with rajasthani print 
3. Brother Sewing machine
4. Fabrics scraps as wadding 
5. Spare acrylic wool to made woollen lace
6. crochet needle
   

 Process:

1. Cut out triangles and squares with various motifs from the Rajasthani Block Print Skirt 
2. Washed these swatches before stiching them to blue fabric strips. 
3. Joined the blue strips with chequered strips 
4. Cutout one continuous rectangle from the bedspread to work as backing. 
5. Sandwiched various fabrics scraps (cotton only) in between as wadding. 
6. Pinned all the three layers and sew straight lines at equal distance with sewing machine( this was tricky part as the scraps were of various lenghts and thicknesses) 
7. Attached bias strips from the remaining blue cloth from the bedspread. 
8. Using spare wool crocheted small lace with double crochet and attached it to the blue rectangles with hand sewing

Things we learnt: This was very steep learning curve for us. 

1. Always use polyester or cotton wadding material rather than fabrics scraps for big quilts (as stiching fabric scraps is time consuming)
2. Consider seam allowance while cutting the various pieces 
3. Never be ashamed of your projects :D

Blue Baby Blanket - Crochet

Hi All! 

Sorry for not updating blog recently, just busy with work and getting more projects done! 

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

I created this baby blanket to welcome our niece in September 2011. As we stay overseas I like to give handmade gifts to create more memories for our relatives.  

 

Materials used: 8 ply Wool, blue purple, brown and yellow; 5mm crochet needle.

 

Time: I worked on my projects only 1 hour on weekdays (while travelling on train!) So it took me 4 weeks to complete this gift. 

Pattern: Double Crochet shells 

 

No matter if you have wealth of all worlds but you can never compare the branded clothing with such hand knit blankets. The kids blankets must be warm, cozy and comfortable. I think nothing is good enough than wool blankets. These are soft and exhibits personalized touch that looks incredibly beautiful.

How to Salvage a Project

Original Quilt -1

Knit square which unravelled

 Refer to my previous post here, to know more about this quilt and how it was created!

So after we completed the quilt and washed it ,knitting of one block unravelled exposing the wadding inside!

Disastrous thing to happen considering the amount of time and energy that was invested in it.  Plus we did decide to gift this to one of our friends baby!

Double OOPS!

       After a lot of cribbing and frustration with ourselves we decide to salvage the project with minimum effort.

Crocheted Blue Patch

So we started crocheting same size patch with shades of blue wools ... spares lying in back of the cupboard :) .... 

Removed the previous woollen stitches and applied the new patch. We did not waste time removing the unravelled patch just covered it with the new one and quilted the squares again to match with the rest of the pattern!

 Mental notes for myself !

1. Always wash the knitting samples before quilting
2. Don't waste time cribbing and frustrating
3. Spare craft items can always be handy when one needs to salvage the project

Quick and Easy - Wollen Quilt

This cheat quilt is brain child of my Mum and me---- who always love to make quirky things from "Items for Sale" box placed outside the craft store ! 

Items required for the quilt :

1. Woollen Knitted Squares
2. Quilt Wadding (Polymer fibre)
3. Spare Cotton piece for backing 
4. Some spare wool 
5. Some pare time and Patience 

 As we love checking the sale box at our corner craft store , we stumbled across stash of knitted samples of various types of wool. These were for 50cents each and unanimously we thought it will be of great use! So after brainstorming and watching/reading too many BHG magazines we had this "Cheat Quilt" Idea! 

Quilts made from scratch includes preparing the quilting blocks (in this case the knitted samples) , which are stitched  together. So we stitched all blue shaded blocks together (hand sewing, machine doesn't work :( thanks Mum )

Then attached wadding and backing of the same size. To get exact square shape we had to twist some corners inside the quilt. Once all the ends were stitched (by hand) we used baby blue coloured wool for quilting (running stitches across the blanket)  squares which keeps the wadding and backing together. 

Credit of making this Quilt entirely goes to my Mum for doing all the hand stitching :) ... I tried to play the role of catalyst ... to keep her motivated from time to time :D

Preserving the tradition

My Attempt of preserving the old tradition of gifting a new born a Baby Rug with a banyan tree leaf motif on it... so I created this banyan leaf shaped quilt as we are overseas and can't find such niche Indian products....

Our Little Girl received these quilts and hats as gift -All made of soft Cotton flanelle material

In Our second project we decided to experiment with the technique of preserving old Heirloom fabrics through Quilting process.

 We got inspired by the art of preserving old family heirloom or sweaters as tradition by quilting them.... hence we used an old pure cotton 9 yard saree as filling for this quilt.... So our girl has a piece of history that belongs to her great grandma ..which hopefully she will treasure..... The fabric used for quilting the design and covering is also from similar heirloom clothes
